Day 15 – Your Favorite Blogger

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

There are lots of things I miss back home. Food, of course, is incomparable. I long for the taste of Jollibee, of the sweetest mango, and of taho. I want to be able to watch Tagalog-dubbed Korean dramas. I miss listening to comedy novelties. I miss the fun daily top tens of The Morning Rush. Sadly, I just have to wait until I’m back home.

Fortunately, there is the power of technology. Thank heavens for the magical world of the internet, of wordpress, I can give in to one of my guilty pleasures. There is live-streaming of  episodes of The Morning Rush. But most importantly, Chico Garcia has his Strange Fruit. I get to see updates from The Morning Rush. Chico is such a great writer. His blog is a mixture of everything fun, kinky, and nice. He shares about his work, his travels, his adventures, his daily source of laughter. His entries are so fun, it’s contagious. Checkirawt! I’m sure you’ll get hooked.

Disclaimer: There are some written in Tagalog. So, if you can’t understand, sorry. :p

P.S.
Chico owes me a greeting. If, by any twist of luck, Chico stumbles upon this blog, I hope he greets my sisters Verna and Vergelle. :p LOL

Day 14 – Your Earliest Memory

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

I remember telling my mom that when I was young I had a very vivid dream of them getting into an accident in the house. We had a 2-storey house, the stairs was about ten steps. I remember my dad carrying my mom down that stairs. Next thing I knew, they were at the bottom of the stairs, blood all over them, not moving and my mom’s eyes were open. I thought they were dead already.

My mom said that it wasn’t a dream and that it really happened. I was 3 years old that time. My mom was pregnant with my youngest sister. My dad came home from a drinking bout. My mom wanted to go down to pee as the bathroom upstairs was not fixed yet. To woo my mom who was a bit pissed by him coming home drunk, he carried my mom. My mom, of course, wouldn’t like and also because he was drunk. He insisted but she struggled. So, naturally, they fell at the bottom of the stairs.

The scene of them not moving was because my dad passed out and my mom was in pain she couldn’t move. I forgot what happened after but I am sure it turned out fine. 21 years after that, my mom and dad are still happily living with each other. My youngest sister was able to make it to become such a beautiful and smart lady.

Hansel and Gretel Preschool Presents RIO

Today, we had our last school performance for the school year. Our theme is the movie RIO.

We had our general rehearsal in the morning and the actual performance was at 3:00 in the afternoon. I was quite satisfied with the kids’ dances during practice, but during the actual performance, a lot of kids were crying.

It was really stressful from the moment I entered the room assigned to my class. One boy wouldn’t wear his costume. Another boy wanted to be with his nanny. Two girls felt sleepy. I bought jellies so I can bribe them to dance or make them stop crying.

When it was the girls’ turn to dance, out of 10, only 1 really followed all throughout the song. The others were following at some point. What was frustrating was that I put the best dancer in the middle only to have her stand and stare at me all throughout the actual dance. Another good dancer cried (and it was really loud).

The boys’ group was not so different. 3 of them cried. 1 kept on walking away from his place. 1 didn’t even make it through the performance. I was kind of relieved when most of them jumped when it was needed for them to jump.

All in all, it was OK for me. It was far from perfect. The practice was even better. But what can I do? They are babies after all. I was already ecstatic to see them move and have the confidence to stand on stage in front of hundreds of people. They can be very difficult to handle, even more difficult to teach them to dance perfectly, but they are so adorable perfect dance steps are the last thing I’d worry about. More pictures to come. 🙂

Day 13 – Somewhere You’d Like To Move Or Visit

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

I have been so addicted to Korean dramas and movies. I really like the romantic-comedy story-lines. But other than all that, I am so hooked with the Korean actors. Teehee.

It started with just one drama that led to another. Then, eventually, I got to appreciate the music as well. Korean language has become so familiar to my ear. I still do not understand it (aside from the basic annyeong haseyo and the likes) but hearing it and listening to it are no longer painful to the ear.

If a drama turned out to be really good (if I shuddered in delight), I usually fall in love with the actor then move on watching his other dramas or movies. Sometimes, if I can no longer find any other drama with them in it, I’d go to youtube and look for other videos.

I got so hooked that I ended up liking anything Korean. I enjoy the food. I even learned how to make the chapchae/jabche. I searched online so I can learn the language which is really difficult. I got to learn the alphabet though.

I want to learn everything about South Korea. I so wanted to go to Seoul, to Busan, and also visit the famous Jeju Island. I want to go there and really see the beauty of it. I want to eat Korean street food, visit a traditional Korean house, and walk those Korean streets. I want to visit the house used in Full House, the coffee shop of the Coffee Prince, and visit the Teddy Bear Museum.

If there’s one place I’d like to live in other than the Philippines, it has to be South Korea. I even tried looking online of job openings for Filipino teachers. So far, I have not succeeded. They usually want someone whose native language is English.

I will go there one day. It is quite easy, I know. There are already lots of people I know who got to visit there. Maybe 1 school break after I have saved up enough money for the trip. Hopefully it would be soon and maybe I can see Min Ho or Yong Hwa in person. Just maybe though but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Day 11 – The City You’re Currently In

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

Grand Indonesia

I just came home from the mall, so here I am rushing my entry for today about the city I am in. Thinking back on the way home, I was sharing to Ate Lan that I am already starting to be independent. By independent, I meant being able to go out on my own. Today, after school, I went out and rode an angkot on my own. This might be a bit confusing so let me explain.

It is almost 10 months since I first arrived here in Jakarta. Coming here, I got to learn that it won’t be as easy as living in Singapore. Majority of people here are not English language users. It would have been OK if they just cannot speak but the bigger problem is that they cannot even understand it. I remember one time when I went to Giordano and asked for a shirt size. The saleslady took the shirt and went off. Ate Lan and I were chatting while waiting for her to come back. We were already wondering what was taking her so long so we decided to go to the other side to check. We got our answer when we saw her chatting with the another saleslady on the other side away from us. Apparently, she didn’t understand what I said. I was also speaking in a foreign language that she decided to stay on the other side of the store away from me.

In the Philippines, we have the jeepney. Here in Jakarta, we have the angkot. It is similar to the Philippine jeepney that has a particular route. But unlike our jeepney, the angkots have no signage where their routes are. They only use numbers and colors and people just know what to take. Taxi drivers are also native speakers. And sometimes, there are those who take advantage if you speak English. And because I can’t speak Bahasa well, I haven’t taken a cab on my own.

I am fine with bad English as long as it’s understandable. I also make mistakes with correct usage sometimes. The biggest problem that I am experiencing in this city is their lack of English language understanding. I cannot go out as I please.   It is only recently that I began walking around the neighborhood on my own. I have learned some words already and can understand conversations through context clues. My Indonesian neighbors are also becoming more familiar each day. I can already greet them in their language. I know the way to the some nearby malls but I am yet to try riding a cab on my own.

Living in this place is a bit comforting knowing that going home is very easy. Also, the streets looks the same. It was easier adjusting because the environment is not very different. I pass by big houses like those in New Manila and their version of sari-sari stores they call warung. It also took me some time to adjust to the right-hand driven cars taking the left side of the street. I would get nervous thinking the other cars are on the wrong lane and would crash into us head-on.

There are also lots of street foods here and most of them have the same sounds as those in the Philippines. I remember my first day here when I heard a man shout taho. I thought they also sell it here. Apparently, they call the tofu here as tahu and they also sell it by shouting around the neighborhood. There is also one that uses a horn like the ones used by those who sell puto.

Indonesia’s Jakarta has lots of similarities with Philippines’ Manila. I am adjusting and learning well so I can survive. Nothing beats home though.

Day 10 – Your First Love and First Kiss

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

My first love was a different person who gave me my first kiss.

When you’re a teenager, you enjoy being with your friends. You are torn between being a child and an adult. I couldn’t decide whether to play outside with the boys or just stay in the room and have girl talks.

He was 18 and I was 14. I met him through my buddy. Of course, being 14 meant I can’t have a boyfriend yet. So I’d sneak out and ditch drum lessons so I can go to my buddy’s house and meet him.

On the day we finally became a couple, he sent me home and asked if he could kiss me. It was so nerve-wracking, I was sweating all over. When he was about to plant a kiss on my right cheek, I dodged and he fell on the floor. I felt so awkward but he asked again if he could so I decided to stay put and let him have his kiss touch my cheek.

So, that was it. a very, very, very awkward first kiss. We didn’t last long though. It was a girl’s trial on relationship. We didn’t even make it through a month.

Now, fast forward to age 18. I finally met the guy I knew I would love. Of all the guys I met and tried to pursue me, he was the only one I didn’t feel nervous with. It was so spontaneous and so comfortable. I didn’t have to act girly so he could like me. I have talked about him in my previous entry so I won’t be elaborating anymore. It has been more than 5 years and I couldn’t even compare him to the other guys who came my way. He’s just awesome like that. ❤

Day 09 – Your Siblings

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

Xerxes (a.k.a. Tet; Kuya)

Kuya Xerxes

A nurse by profession, kuya is the house master chef! We don’t like to admit but he’s really good at it. He’s rarely home, though. God only knows where he usually stays. So, when he’s home, we really make sure he does the cooking. He expects it anyway. He’s such a Casanova (Sorry, kuya). At 28 [29 on May 24], I really think he has not met his match.

Verna (a.k.a. Ate)

Ate Verna

She’s the medical technologist that interns drool over (I do exaggerate a bit). She’s pretty but I guess she doesn’t believe so[because she knows I’m prettier LOL]. She’s the most responsible sister ever. She is someone the family can really rely on. Since kuya is mostly absent, she took on the role of the family driver when pops is away. She’s a great big sis.

Vergelle (a.k.a. Gel; The Precious One; Bunso)

Gel

Gel is 4 years younger than me. She’s a 4th year chemical engineering student in the University of the Philippines. She is the precious one because she’s our baby. She is a constant honor student since nursery. She finished elementary as the batch salutatorian and graduated with high honors from Philippine Science High School. She is also among the Oblation scholars (Top 50 of the thousands who took the UPCAT) of her batch. She’s precious because she’s my parents one-way ticket to fame. LOL. At 20, she’s still and will always be our baby. We can’t say no to her requests. She’s has a way to make everyone smile with her antics. She’s the magnet that keeps the family together.

Alfredo (a.k.a. Janno)

Ja

Ja is really my cousin but he has been living with us since we were young kids that we consider him more of a brother than a cousin. He’s been living with us since he was in 5th grade. He’s now a high school teacher. He’s the ever dependable guy who knows chores more than anyone else at home. He’s very responsible and my mom considers him as her 2nd son.

Luis (a.k.a. Awis) and Sophia (a.k.a. Pipay)

Luis and Sophia

They’re another set of cousins who lived with us. They’re the kids we were able to take care of when they were babies. They are the sweetest kids ever. They already migrated to Guam and they are greatly missed at home. We don’t have kiddos to bring to the mall. I hope I see them again soon. 🙂

Vergelle's high school graduation dinner with the fambam.

This is the most complete picture I could find. Ja was the one who took the photo. Handsome and pretty earthlings eh? Yeah, blame it on the genes. LOL. 😀

Day 08 – A Moment You Felt Most Satisfied With Your Life

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

On the 5th of July 2011, I finally had the liberty I have been craving for. I got to explore new places. I met new people. I do things as I please. It was awesome.

When everything eventually became a routine, I started longing for them. I wanted my comfort zone. I want my family.

5 months after, I was home. It was the awesome-st feeling ever. That first time to be home was so precious. The reality struck that the family is something you cannot compare with anything. The first hugs were so comforting I didn’t want it to end. It was the first Christmas I didn’t take for granted. I was where I needed to be. Those were the people who love me unconditionally.I can be me without any inhibitions. I was happy to see everyone moving around with a smile. I know they, too, were happy. It was picture perfect.

Day 07 – Your Zodiac Sign

30-Day Meme Challenge Series

This is one hard topic here. I don’t really care much about my zodiac. I honestly don’t understand it. So here I am searching over the internet about my sign. I am a Virgo. When I was young, I always thought that it was the reason why I was named Vera (you know, because I’m a Virgo LOL).

I will just have to highlight things which I believe describes me.  This is sourced from http://zodiac-signs-astrology.com

Virgo Strength Keywords:

– Analytical
– Observant
– Helpful
– Reliable
– Precise

Virgo Weakness Keywords:

– Skeptical
– Fussy
– Inflexible
– Cold
– Interfering

Virgo and Independence:

Virgo is a very independent zodiac sign. They are fully able to put their intelligence to use and get things done for themselves. It is possible however that their narrow mindedness causes their creativity to suffer and they may lead regular routine lives. They may dwell too much on the past and over complicate things and this may limit their ability to move forward and confuse themselves. In conclusion, Virgos are able to be independent but the less evolved types will have difficult if someone is not there helping them to achieve more and not be so critical of themselves.

I like doing things on my own. For me, working alone makes me finish the task faster. I don’t have to deal with the clashing of different ideas. I prefer 1 idea at a time, it’s either yours or mine.

Virgo and Friendship:

People look up to Virgo for friends because they are straight thinkers and solve problems logically. They are truthful, loyal and determined. Some people might find them cold or emotionally detached because they live in their minds, not in their emotions and feelings. It might be hard to pin down how a Virgo friend is feeling because they easily live in denial. A person who is able to read deep into another person will notice when Virgo is not well but if they confront them about it, they would rather retreat then talk about it. It is best to keep your emotional distance from a Virgo friend unless they open up to you first. Virgo might try to analyze and control a friend’s life but only with the idea that they will improve their life, not purely for the sake of controlling. Be patient with your Virgo friend and understand that their recommendations are only to make your life better.

This is such a big check. I keep my friends and I fight for them. But if you’re wrong, no excuses.  However, I am a very transparent person. I can be easily read. I disagree about easily living in denial. I like talking about my problems. I like people to know how I feel. Also, when it’s about a friend’s problem, I easily speak my mind. It’s difficult for me to restrain myself from giving advice.

Virgo and Business:

Virgos are very intelligent, they have an excellent memory and a highly analytical mind. This makes them good investigators and researchers. They also have the ability to probe into a person’s emotions and they can often see into people and detect what their motives are. This makes them great policemen or interrogators. Virgos are very good at problem solving, this is what they do best. They are confronted with a problem, they will pick apart the pieces and put it together in the proper order. They are rational thinkers and are good at settling other people’s disputes and putting them on the right track for reconciliation. Any position that requires the above features, which is a very long list, is perfect for the Virgo. They keep the world in order.

Let’s just say I’m conceited but I like to think I am intelligent. If you don’t agree, just let it be. This is my blog after all. LOL.

Virgo Temperament:

Before a Virgo plunges into anything, from a problem to a vacation idea, they need to analyze all the facts and know all the details before they plunge in and make a decision. This makes them seem indecisive and slow. Virgo’s perception is their reality, more so than other astrology signs. What they believe is what will be, if they have a negative outlook on life, things will present themselves to be negative and they will be very moody and isolated/detached. If they are positive, the same events that occur will be held in a positive light and they will be a pleasant, well adjusted person. A Virgo mind is a very powerful mind and they must have the proper attitude for their life to be happy and successful. Virgo needs to get in touch with their feelings, this is why they usually seem cold or detached. They are very prone of living in denial. They will say the feel okay or everything is alright even when it’s not. This is an easy way out, the one thing that Virgo does not like to analyze is their feelings so pretending everything is okay is a good defense mechanism for not having to take a closer look at their feelings. Virgo has an unpredictable and sometimes unstable temperament.

I remember one summer when I joined my friends for a trip to the beach. They said that everything is already taken cared of. All I have to do is to prepare my budget and myself. Little did I know that I was in for a great adventure. The plan was to go to Batangas. We ended up in Bataan. That’s about more than 60 miles apart. They didn’t even know what resort to go to. I was so pissed off and told everyone not to ever, ever go on a trip without a definite plan. Right then and there, I gathered all our money and went to the market to buy our food for the next day. I made sure they laid out a definite plan before we took off again. I was such a bitch for bossing them around. I guess it came from my being a teacher. It never happened again though. I always make sure the next trips are carefully planned out before we go.

Virgo Deep Inside:

They need to be organized in their mind, sometimes all their energy is taken from organizing their mind that they have a difficult time organizing their surroundings. They easily look too deep into an issue and over analyze what they percept. Virgo is ambitious and strives to always know more and have more. This is in their eternal quest to bring order to chaos. Even if order is obtained from an outsiders’ point of view, Virgo will not be settled for they have a very active mind that is always thinking and can never be silenced. Virgos want to be of use, they need to be important and essential to everyone in their lives and in everything they do. Virgo’s major life lesson is to learn to trust in and have faith in the unknown. They have to understand that things in life happen for a reason that is not always known to them, they do not have to always know everything. They need to learn to calm down and not over-analyze a situation or event. Deep inside, Virgo is very sensitive and they need to be appreciated for all the things they do. When is Virgo is offended or hurt, they may never show it.

You should have seen my bedroom in the Philippines.

Virgo in a Nutshell:

Virgo exists in the mind, everything is inside. To the world, Virgo presents a calm and collected exterior but on the inside, nervous uncontrolled intensity in the mind, trying to figure things out, how to improve everything, analyzing and thinking. Virgo can tire itself out without even moving! Virgo has a constant drive to improve and perfect, this can lead to extreme pickiness and finickiest. They are pure, their motives are honest never malicious and they want to accomplish something.

I like to think that I can be perceived as calm and collected but I am very transparent and can be easily read. I am a loud person who speaks my mind.

As a whole, I can say that I’m a true blue Virgo.
